GRIIDC Surpasses 3,000 Datasets!
A pandemic, hurricanes, tropical storms— through it all GRIIDC has continued working to curate and publish important datasets entering the cycle of scientific discovery. And because of the hard work from all involved (researchers, administrators, data managers and software developers), as of December 12, 2020, we are excited to celebrate surpassing 3,000 datasets located in the GRIIDC repository — 3,173 to be exact!
Diversity of Data
Born from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill with the purpose of managing and storing scientific data from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) program, GRIIDC has since amassed an ocean of scientific data from researchers from all over the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Data types include biological, physical, chemical, imaging, video, modeling, acoustics, and more! All of this data is publicly available for download on the GRIIDC website.
Improved Search Feature
GRIIDC users can now find more accurate and relevant results thanks to the newly improved GRIIDC search feature, known as Data Discovery. The improvements allow users to search through the GRIIDC database by using a combination of search terms, geographic areas, and research group filters to more precisely narrow down the search results. Users can then select a dataset title to download the data from the dataset landing page (example here and in the photo above) where they will find information such as the dataset Digital Object Identifier (DOI), point of contact, dataset authors, abstract, associated publications, file formats, and more.
Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable Data
The GRIIDC team of subject matter experts, data curators, managers, and software developers work hard to ensure datasets follow the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, or FAIR, principles. Open data is vital for not only transparency in science, but also to help others build off of previous work and advance scientific discoveries. Read more about sharing and citing data here.
3,000 Datasets and Counting
While the bulk of the current 3,173 datasets in GRIIDC is from the 10 year GoMRI program, GRIIDC continues to grow by creating new partnerships with individual researchers and organizations including the Mississippi Based RESTORE Act Center of Excellence (MBRACE) program, Texas OneGulf Center of Excellence, Florida RESTORE Act Centers of Excellence Program (FLRACEP), the National Academy of Sciences, Harte Research Institute, NOAA and Texas Parks and Wildlife. We welcome other research institutions and individual researchers to store their data with us!
