GRIIDC joins DataONE
DataONE recently posted a story about GRIIDC becoming a DataONE member node. The original posting is located here: https://www.dataone.org/news/gulf-mexico-research-initiative-information....
DataONE's 38th Member Node, GRIIDC (the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information and Data Cooperative), is the vehicle by which results of research in the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative are made available to the community.
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is an independent research program designed to study the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the environment and public health in the Gulf of Mexico. The goal of GoMRI is to improve society’s ability to understand and mitigate the impacts of hydrocarbon pollution and stressors on the marine environment. Knowledge accrued will be applied to restoration and improving the long-term environmental health of the Gulf of Mexico.
All data obtained through GoMRI will be shared openly through GRIIDC and results are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. GoMRI aims to submit all data to National Data Archives, such as NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, for long-term preservation. GoMRI funded activities produce educational resources, including hands-on student activities and lesson plans.
Detailed information about all projects, researchers and institutions that have received funding through GoMRI, and scientific peer-reviewed publications produced through this funding, are available online at http://research.gulfresearchinitiative.org

About DataONE: DataONE enables universal access to data and also facilitates researchers in fulfilling their need for data management and in providing secure and permanent access to their data. DataONE offers the scientific community a suite of tools and training materials that cover all aspects of the data life cycle from data collection, to management, analysis and publication.
About GRIIDC: GRIIDC is housed at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies (HRI) at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) . The GRIIDC team is building a data management system for scientific data generated by Gulf of Mexico researchers. The GRIIDC data management system provides researchers with a variety of tools to help manage data throughout the lifecycle of a project. While the system assists researchers with multiple phases of data management, the main functions of the system are storing and sharing data.
Researchers from diverse fields of study, including biology, chemistry, physical oceanography, sociology, political science and public health, are able to store their data in the GRIIDC system. Through the GRIIDC Data Discovery portal other researchers, policy makers, and the general public are able to search for and download this data. This shared data can be used to address innovative scientific research questions, assess policies and programs, and in educational initiatives. By providing a forum for both storing and sharing data the GRIIDC system increases the impact of scientific research in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond for the benefit of society.
