GRIIDC Attends 2019 MBRACE All Hands Meeting
GRIIDC is dedicated to meeting with new research partners in order to spread the word about GRIIDC’s open data mission. In August Rosalie Rossi, GRIIDC Program Manager, attended the 2019 Mississippi Based RESTORE Act Center of Excellence (MBRACE) All Hands meeting in Jackson, Mississippi and gave an overview of GRIIDC’s data repository and basic tutorials on how to use the system.
MBRACE is a consortium of Mississippi’s four research universities: Jackson State University (JSU), Mississippi State University (MSU), The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), The University of Mississippi (UM), and with USM serving as the lead institution.
The first day of the meeting consisted of research presentations from all of the universities involved. Some interesting topics of research include: Biosensors for the Measurement of Bivalve Valve Movement from Jackson State University; Water Quality and Benthic Habitat Observations for Enhanced Understanding and Sustainable Management of Oyster Reefs in Mississippi Sound from Mississippi State University; Abiotic and Biotic Influences on Current and Historic Distributions of Oyster Reefs from The University of Mississippi; and Sustainability and Restoration of Oyster Reef Habitat in Mississippi Sound: A Larval Transport and Recruitment Approach from The University of Southern Mississippi.
The purpose of the meeting was to provide updates to state managers, the External Advisory Group, and MBRACE Administrators on the research status and results of Core Research Program projects. Also, facilitating discussions among attendees was a goal, as well as encouraging collaboration across projects. On the second day, Rossi gave presentations and demonstrations of the GRIIDC website — including an introduction to the program, how to organize data, and how to submit data to GRIIDC. The group discussed synthesis of projects, later breaking into small working groups to discuss in further detail. Lastly, MBRACE discussed the next steps and long-term direction of MBRACE.
GRIIDC is excited about the addition of new groups and individual investigators who want to be a part of the open data culture by using GRIIDC as their choice data repository. Other groups working with GRIIDC include Texas OneGulf Center of Excellence, Florida RESTORE Act Centers of Excellence Program (FLRACEP), and the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. We continue to encourage other Gulf of Mexico institutions and researchers to store their data with us and welcome invitations to speak to more interested parties!
