As the number of datasets submitted to GRIIDC increases, the GRIIDC team has been growing to keep up! GRIIDC recently hired oceanographer Dr. Inia Soto Ramos as a Research Specialist to help curate datasets submitted to GRIIDC, prepare and submit data to NCEI, and process data for posting on the GRIIDC ERDDAP server.

The GRIIDC data curation team reviews every dataset submitted to GRIIDC. Specifically, the team reviews the descriptive information provided in the Dataset Submission interface to make sure it accurately reflects the contents of the dataset. The team also checks to make sure that each file can be opened and that files do not contain materials that are subject to copyright. Reviewers make sure that data are in the rawest format that is useful to the scientific community and permits the widest reuse. As you can imagine, this requires a lot of time and effort so we are happy to welcome Dr. Inia Soto Ramos to the team!

Dr. Inia Soto Ramos received both her Ph.D. and master’s degree in Biological Oceanography at the University of South Florida. Her dissertation focused on the evaluation and detection of harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of Mexico. She has expertise in satellite remote sensing, ocean color, and optical oceanography. She has applied her expertise to a variety of multidisciplinary research topics such as coral reefs, marine connectivity, harmful algal blooms and phytoplankton ecology, water quality, and coastal dynamics. She is also passionate about scientific outreach and education. She had the opportunity to participate in a binational collaboration between Mexico and the U.S., and most recently she was a postdoctoral researcher for the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative CONsortium for oil spill exposure pathways in COastal River-Dominated Ecosystems (CONCORDE) at the University of Southern Mississippi where she coupled satellite imagery, circulation models, and field data to understand river plume dynamics in the Mississippi Bight.

GRIIDC is excited to have such a knowledgeable and experienced person join our team. Welcome Inia!
